(CNN) — One person died Friday after drowning in the water off the coast of Corpus Christi, Texas, as Hurricane Ike approached, authorities said.

Capt. Robert MacDonald of the Nueces County Sheriff’s office said a 19-year-old man was swept out to sea after he and a friend went to the end of a 100-foot jetty to look at the waves generated by the storm.

One of those waves swept the man off the jetty and onto the rocks below, MacDonald said. Two bystanders tried to rescue the man but they were also pushed onto the rocks. One suffered serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital, the captain said.

The 19-year-old victim has been declared dead, MacDonald said, but the Coast Guard has not yet recovered his body.

Wouldn't Darwin be proud?

  1. It reminds me of that surfer who was carried away by strong winds from Hanna. What were they thinking?
This Ike hurricane sounds scary especially after hearing the warnings of 'certain death'.

  2. I don't ever want to take delight in someone's death. But I just have to say that for someone to act with such total disregard after a million warnings have already been issued...well...they don't exactly get my sympathy!

  6. These people have a complete lack of common sense. When a person ignores repeated warnings of a given event.....your on your own! Expecting someone to risk their life to rescue you from your own idiocy is not reasonable.
Behold the power of stupid !
Up here in the White mountains of NH if you go out climbing and backpacking without the proper gear and then require rescue, you will receive a bill for the search and rescue effort.....

  7. I agree, CS. These people should have to pay in some way. The bleeding hearts will argue that they've paid with their suffering...but suffering don't pay the bills! And when these guys are down there working round the clock - my husband included - they deserve a lot more than they'll ever be paid for their efforts over idiots.
